Exploring ideas, research and reflections that shape Route Education’s approach to literacy, learning and life chances.
Route Education aligns directly with DfE drivers: closing attainment gaps, embedding SEND-inclusive practice, strengthening belonging, and evidencing progress at scale. Our offer spans targeted intervention (Word Roots), a fully sequenced Year 7 morphology spine, and consultancy.
Together, these strands deliver a research-led, outcome-driven model that improves literacy, re-engagement, and long-term pathways.

What is Route Education?

Why it Works
Because we don’t just patch gaps – we build literacy from the root up.
Our Morphology First model teaches pupils how words are constructed, giving them the tools to unlock Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary across every subject. Instead of short-term fixes, learners gain durable strategies to decode new words, expand their vocabulary, and approach reading and writing with confidence.
This root-based approach bridges the space between KS2 phonics and KS4 disciplinary literacy - helping schools raise attainment, improve engagement, and prepare pupils for success at GCSE and beyond.

The Notebook
Route Education delivers high-impact English and literacy programmes that re-engage learners and raise attainment at KS3 and KS4. Through small-group tuition and innovative approaches, we help schools and trusts close persistent literacy gaps while building lasting confidence in reading and writing.
At the heart of our model is a simple principle: language confidence grows when students understand how words work. That’s why every strand of our offer begins with morphology, vocabulary and grammar – the building blocks of reading, writing, and learning across the curriculum.
Our flagship Morphology First model exemplifies this approach. By teaching roots, prefixes, and suffixes in a clear, sequenced way, pupils unlock hundreds of academic words across English, science, history, and more. With structured lessons, regular retrieval practice, and cross-curricular reinforcement, schools gain a consistent, evidence-based strategy that improves comprehension, strengthens writing, and sets learners up for long-term success.
