Providing a Structure For Success

Catch up. Keep up. Thrive.

Our KS3 Foundation programme is designed for students in Years 7 to 9 who need targeted support with reading, writing, and language confidence.

What sets us apart?

We teach literacy from the inside out - starting with the structure of words.

Our Morphology First model explicitly teaches root words, prefixes, and suffixes, helping students decode meaning, build vocabulary, and develop long-term reading fluency.

Whether commissioned by schools, MATs, or local authorities, KS3 Foundation is an early intervention that delivers clarity, confidence, and progress.

Morphology at the Core

Most interventions focus on symptoms. We go to the root.

At Route Education, every KS3 session begins with explicit instruction in morphology, phonics, and grammar.

This structured approach is backed by evidence from the EEF and other literacy researchers. It helps students:

  • Decode unfamiliar words with confidence

  • Develop vocabulary depth and retrieval

  • Improve writing fluency and precision

  • Transfer skills across subjects

We don’t rely on worksheets or guessing strategies. We teach students how words work - so they can work with words.

Representing the different elements involved in improving literacy

KS3 is a pivotal moment. We make it count.

Many students arrive at secondary school with reading gaps—but lack access to specialist, age-appropriate intervention. KS3 Foundation is designed to close those gaps by starting with what matters most: how words are built.

Research shows that explicit morphological instruction improves vocabulary, reading comprehension, and spelling—especially for students who’ve fallen behind.

Our model blends structured word study, meaningful reading, confident writing, and purposeful talk in every session.
