When This Intervention Is Commissioned

GCSE English Language intervention is typically commissioned when:

  • Year 11 outcomes are fragile or inconsistent

  • mock results indicate pupils are not converting knowledge into marks

  • staffing capacity is stretched or specialist input is required

  • leaders need a focused, accountable response without increasing workload

This intervention is most often used as a targeted, time-limited response in the final stages of KS4.

What the Intervention Involves

GCSE English Success is delivered through clearly defined intervention formats, selected according to cohort need and timing within the academic year.

Across all formats, schools receive:

  • baseline diagnostic assessment embedded within teaching

  • expert, live online teaching delivered by Route Education specialists

  • exam-focused reading and writing instruction aligned to mark schemes

  • targeted rehearsal of high-yield exam tasks

  • concise reporting to support leadership oversight

This is not a catch-up programme. It is focused exam craft and rehearsal, designed to improve performance in the time available.

Intervention cohorts are clearly defined and purposefully grouped.

Typical strand focuses include:

  • securing Grade 4/5 for borderline pupils

  • moving pupils confidently across key grade thresholds

  • refining exam performance for pupils capable of higher grades

This precision allows teaching time to be used efficiently and avoids the dilution that often affects mixed-ability interventions.

Who Delivers the Intervention

All GCSE English Language intervention is delivered live and online by Route Education staff.

This ensures:

  • subject-specialist teaching by experienced Heads of English and senior leaders

  • consistency of approach across sessions

  • no planning or delivery burden for school staff

  • clear accountability for intervention delivery and quality

The intervention is designed to support departments, not replace classroom teaching.

Monitoring is embedded within teaching, not added as a parallel system.

Schools typically receive:

  • baseline and follow-up indicators of progress

  • light-touch checks for understanding through exam-style tasks

  • a concise end-of-programme summary highlighting progress, strengths and next steps

The emphasis is on what converts to marks, rather than duplicating assessment systems.

Assessment, Monitoring and Reporting

Indicative reporting provided to schools to support oversight and evaluation.

GCSE English Success can be commissioned as a stand-alone intervention or as part of wider work.

In some contexts, it may:

  • inform future KS3 literacy intervention planning

  • sit alongside strategic consultancy around English provision

  • support longer-term curriculum and intervention coherence

All intervention is commissioned with defined scope, duration and purpose.

Relationship to Wider English and Literacy Work

Schools and trusts commission Route Education because:

  • internal interventions struggle to maintain consistency at scale

  • mixed-ability groupings dilute impact

  • 1:1 tutoring is costly and difficult to quality-assure

  • teacher workload limits rehearsal and feedback cycles

Our intervention offers a calm, expert, externally delivered alternative, focused on outcomes rather than visibility.
